Review

For many years Dave Davies was my favorite musician, and during the years 1997 through 2003, the years I call the Dave.1 years, I saw him many times, met a lot of other fans, and formed some lasting friendships. Nowadays seeing Dave perform is not just about seeing a koncert by a rock 'n' roll legend, it's also about the nostalgia involved in recalling those good times and reminiscing about the old touring days.

Dave played most of the same set that he performed at this venue two years ago. He included a pleasing four-song acoustic set tucked in among the rockers. His band is the same as two years ago, consisting of multi-instrumentalist David Nolte, the only returning musician from the Dave.1 years, and drummer/backing vocalist Dennis Diken (of The Smithereens). They treated the enthusiastic audience to one new/old song called "Cradle to the Grave," from Dave's recently released Decade, a compilation of previously unreleased songs recorded in the 1970s. One of the best aspects of Dave's solo shows has always been his wit, and it's just as sharp as it ever was. He told of rejecting the record company's suggestion that Cradle to the Grave would make a good title for the album, saying "I'm not quite ready for that!" When introducing "Strangers," the one song that probably best represents his life philosophy, he made a touching little speech about getting older but staying young in spirit, but then lightened the mood by saying he didn't want to ask the ages of anyone in the crowd because he might be the oldest person there! Dave is 72 years old; since the last time I saw him he's quit coloring his hair, and he's looking like a robust and debonaire septuagenarian.

This evening I had the chance to reconnect with two of my favorite people from the Dave.1 years. David Nolte, multi-instrumentalist and all-around talent, clearly loves playing with Dave and is grateful for the chance to lend him a musical helping hand in these later day tours. The other Dave.1 contact of mine was Doug Hinman, whose claim to fame in the Kinks kommunity is that he compiled and published two very large books chronicling all of The Kinks' concert dates and all of their recorded output. By anyone's reckoning, this was a giant undertaking in those pre-internet days, and a lasting kontribution to the legacy of the band.

Before and after the show the sound system was playing a compilation of Kinks songs performed by other artists. It was a treat to listen to and added to the anticipation beforehand. This was my only time seeing Dave during this tour and my 60th Dave show altogether, going back to 1997.
