Lady Godiva

A Summer Song

Review

In the magic musical years of the 1960s, during the British Invasion time, there were two English pop duos who shared many characteristics. They were Peter & Gordon and Chad & Jeremy. Both duos recorded pop music that was easy on the ears, with tight harmonies. Their influences included folk music, English music hall, skiffle, and American pop music of the '50s. Their songs included breezy love songs and ballads and an occasional novelty number. A half century has passed, and Gordon Waller of Peter & Gordon has passed away, and Chad Stuart of Chad & Jeremy has retired, leaving their bandmates with a problem. Thank you to the universe that some problems have an obvious and thoroughly satisfying solution. Meet Peter & Jeremy: the superpopduo.

The duos may have been rivals back in the day, but even then they travelled in the same social circles. The Beatles and especially Paul McCartney were mentioned frequently. Each song was accompanied by a story, usually an extremely funny story, about the origins of the song and what the boys were doing during those years. The set list included songs by each of the original duos plus a number of covers of songs by other performers with whom Peter and Jeremy worked in one capacity or another over the years. A slide show, with occasional video, accompanied the stories and songs, projected on the big screen at the back of the stage. This audiovisual element was very enjoyable and added to the sparkle of this very entertaining show.

After the '60s British Invasion years were over, Peter Asher went into music production and has worked with many top performers, and Jeremy Clyde expanded the acting career that he began on Batman and Dick Van Dyke. Both have stayed active in music. Both singers have retained their lovely singing voices. Both played guitar, and Peter also used a few other instruments including a bass guitar and a banjolele (which he called the "bastard child of a banjo and a ukulele"). They were accompanied by Jeff Alan Ross on piano, on guitar on a couple of songs, and backing vocals. Jeff also contributed an occasional witty quip.

There weren't a whole lot of millennials at this show. The audience were mostly baby boomers revisiting the happiness that the music of these two wonderful duos brought them back in those much more innocent times. With much laughter and singing along, everyone had a splendid time.

I've seen Jeremy Clyde once before, as part of Chad & Jeremy, also at the Iron Horse, in September, 2009. Review of that show is here.
