Review

Ali McGuirk and her two backing musicians presented an hour-long concert of melodic, mostly quiet soul-tinged music. Ali has a smoky, evocative voice that was extremely engaging to listen to. She's also an accomplished guitarist, and when accompanied by lead guitar and stand-up base, her music made you feel like you were in an out-of-the-way nightclub at midnight. Ali started the show on acoustic guitar; when she picked up the electric for a few songs later in the show, it raised the energy level a bit.

The Spire Center for the Arts has been presenting this Lobby Series for a few months now. This was my first time attending. There are about seventy folding chairs set up in the lobby. Seating is by general admission. Vaccination status was checked at the door, and masking was required. I hope the venue continues these Covid-safe policies as the government is easing some of the restrictions in light of the pandemic numbers coming down.

The Lobby Series mainly features younger and up-and-coming musicians, and is held on Thursdays. I'm sure I'll be returning for another evening of music in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
