Review

Concert Going Partner and I were on holiday in southern Vermont, and when a free concert on the lawn of a museum is offered, that's an offer we won't refuse.

These two singer/songwriters, based in nearby New York State, put on an extremely enjoyable show. Jay played the mandolin adeptly, almost like a lead guitar in some cases, and seemed to be really transported while soloing on this traditional folk instrument. Mike was equally adept on the acoustic guitar, and they sounded fine together. It's clear they hadn't practiced together much, but who cares about details like that in a show like this. Both sang well and they had very sweet harmonies. They more or less alternated songs. Some were originals, others covers of old folk songs, and a few tunes from the rock 'n' roll era. A fun bluegrass feeling dominated the evening. Mike McCann reminded us a bit of Ray Mason, that master of the Silvertone from not very far from here (western Mass.) -- similar hair and stage personality and some drily witty songwriting -- but a much newer guitar.
