Review

The Beatles tribute band Studio Two were really on this afternoon. In the handful of times I've seen the band, I've seen a couple of different Pauls and a couple of different Ringos, and the fellas today were both really good. John and George, in real life twin brothers who started this band, were both at the top of their game, too. Everybody played and sang really well and they were doing the Beatles accents and personalities excellently, too.

The set list of thirty early Beatles songs, played at a 3 minute pop song pace, were crowd pleasers all. Some were the most familiar songs in the world ("She Loves You," "I Want to Hold Your Hand"), some were obscure tunes plumbed from the very early Star Club days ("Red Sails in the Sunset," "Bad Boy"), a few stretched the early Beatles formula a bit ("Taxman," "Doctor Robert"). George had a few lead vocals, Ringo had two. The harmonies were just terrific. These lads can really sing. "Paperback Writer," a song I hadn't heard Studio Two perform before, featured harmonies that were just as good as the record.

The school auditorium was jammed full for these two sets, at 1 pm and 2 pm. Some special audience members were having even more fun than the rest. Behind us was sitting a young woman in a glittery dress whose mother was a flight attendant on the Beatles' plane on their last tour, ever. There were a mother and young son dressed just like Paul and George from the Sgt. Pepper album cover, complete with moustaches. I got a picture of those two at the later show I attended, Zoë Lewis, so check out that set of photos (I should have those posted in a day or two).

The Chatham Elementary School gym really isn't the best place to have a show, in terms of lighting or sound, but there's a good big stage and lots of seats, and the early afternoon showtimes work for me, since I have no interest in being on the road at night on New Year's Eve. Another audience member was a young woman named Rosie, who's one of the two Studio Two fans we met at a diner in New Hampshire once, which is where I first found out about this groovy Beatles tribute band. We also found out the band will be playing a show on Cape Cod on Aug. 26, 2023 at the Cape Cod Cultural Center in South Yarmouth -- something to look forward to.
