Blink

When Dog Meets Wolf

Review

Last time we saw Zoë, she was with her full band. Today she had a single accompanist, Tom Leidenfrost, who was really terrific. He works at the Truro Vineyard where the show was held and invited Zoë to perform there. She's been playing quite a few live shows and has some lined up for Women's Week in Provincetown next month, and I'm hoping she'll do First Night in Chatham again this year.

If you're feeling blue, a Zoë Lewis concert will cure what ails you. It's not just that she's an extremely talented songwriter and musician, but she is a bundle of joyful energy. She performed a selection of classic American popular jazz from the early 20th century, a number of her own originals, and a couple of new songs, one of which is the profound and joyful "Blink," a song about the virtual shows she did during the pandemic.

Tom's accordion really worked to accompany her songs. He also took two lead vocals with a surprisingly deep and melodic voice, including a Klezmir song called "Joseph Joseph." Totally fun!

We'd been to the Truro Vineyards once before for a day long festival a few years ago. This was held on a smaller stage off to the side of one of the buildings. It's a beautiful property with blossoming late summer flowers and, of course, wine for sale brewed right on the premises. Zoë was indulging and said the wine was very good! There was a small but tremendous crowd consisting largely of a group of women who set up their lawn chairs in front of the stage and seemed to have seen Zoë a number of times in Provincetown. They laughed with gusto at the bad puns of "Breakfast Blues," reminding me of how very funny that song is!

Thank you to Zoë, Tom, and the staff of the Truro Vineyards for a fantastic (and free!) evening of music.
