Angels Fly

Review

Kim Moberg is an accomplished singer/songwriter who lives on Cape Cod, but she originally comes from a faraway place. She is a member of the Tlingit tribal group of Alaska Native Indigenous Peoples. Her recent album, The Seven Fires Prophecy, tells the sweeping story of Turtle Island ("planet earth") from her people's point of view. This concert included my favorite song from that album, "Seventh Fire," as well as an additional number that adds to the history that's on the album (a bonus track, I guess you'd call it), "Eighth Fire."

The rest of the one hour show consisted of other songs from Kim's catalog of thoughtful, tuneful, and for the most part serious songs she's composed and recorded over the last few years, as well as a truly excellent Joni Mitchell cover. There are a number of really good female singer/songwriters out there, and where Kim really excels is in her guitar playing. She played with a splendidly light touch on the strings on a couple of the songs that was just so pleasing to the ear. When I complimented her on her playing after the show, she told me she practices a lot. She also says that she has overcome a very painful stage fright that kept her back in the early days of live performing. You go girl!

It was a rainy day outside, just right for such an entertaining indoor performance, and a very good crowd took advantage of the opportunity. We had brunch in a local diner before the show, and shopped the library book sale afterwards. I can't think of a better way to spend my Sunday afternoon.
