Review

While driving to Acushnet, a town that's just north of New Bedford, we weren't sure if the show by 60s Thunder would be held outside or moved inside the library, because, ironically, there was thunder in the forecast. But by the time we got there for the 6 pm start, it was sunny, hot, and humid, a typical summer evening in New England.

We've seen Matt Borrello recently, opening for and playing guitar for Grace Morrison at the Spire in Plymouth last year. But the rest of the band was new to us, and they sure were good. They all dressed in 60s appropriate clothes, bright, multicolored patterns, not quite psychedelic, but very nice to look at.

Blanggggg! That unmistakeable chord that opens "Hard Day's Night" and I was immediately hooked, hearing that song for the second time in five nights. It's probably the first time in my long concert going career I ever saw one band end with a song and a completely different band open with the same song just a few days later. Willie Nile ended with "Hard Day's Night" five nights ago at the show in Manchester, and here 60s Thunder started with that same glorious sound of the 60s!

These four fellas did a splendid job with about a half dozen Beatles songs; other British Invasion (Kinks, Hollies); American top 40 and R&B; and a touching tribute to the late Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. They sang very good harmonies and Dan, Ian, and Matt traded off lead vocals. Matt mostly played lead guitar but the other two took a gander at an occasional lead, and Ian played keyboard on a couple of songs. They set up on a pavilion at the bottom of a hill behind the library with an area of astroturf under the roof of the pavilion in front of the stage, which I'm sure would have seen action as a dance floor if it hadn't been so hot. Now here comes the mystery. Concert Going Partner and I set up our lawn chairs to the side of the astroturf/dance area to be close to the stage, for good visuals and good sound. But almost everybody else sat a good distance away up the hill. I don't understand why people don't want to be close to the stage; some of these folks would have needed binoculars to see the band! Anyway, thanks to the Acushnet Library for starting off their summer concert series on such a fun and melodic note!
