Review
Truro Summer Concerts bursts forth with an hour of music, a touch of vaudeville, some straight up comedy, and expressions of the emotions of living in this world and sharing adventures with those encountered along the way. Zoë sings, plays piano, ukulule, guitar, harmonica; she tells stories of the amazing range of characters she has known along the way; she brings laughter and tears. She tells the truly amazing true story behind "Slow Boat to China" -- she actually took a ride on a freighter to China (was the only woman on board and ran a karaoke hour every night, and how many songs again did you say you wrote Zoë?).
Her band rounds out the sound expertly, to audience members used to hearing her solo, or with just Roxanne on recorder and harmony vocals. Her bass player (the world-famous, or maybe, shall we say, Cape-famous Ron Siegel) climbs up on his doghouse, adding to that vaudeville feel. (See pictures!) Members of the audience sing along; they make crazy vocalizations that I don't know how to describe (how do they do that?); they do their own expert juggling (again, see pictures!); they leave the show with huge smiles on their faces!
Along with her frequent sidekick Roxanne Layton (recorder and vocals), it's a delight to hear all that music coming from the standup bass and the sax, harmonica, and drums. Next year if the Truro Library (big thank you to these libraries for these on the lawn shows!) has this show again I will sit further to the side so Zoë won't be right in front of the drummer. But the undaunted shutterbug scurries over to the side of the stage to get a series of photos of Kareem sporting his new blonde tresses. The only thing wrong with this absolutely delightful, delicious, de-lovely show is that, at one hour, it's too short!
