Enjoy It While It Lasts

Terry Kitchen, folkie with a guitar and a range of tuneful and literate songs, played at the South Shore Folk Music Club, Duxbury, MA. Visually he reminded me of Graham Parker, and his songwriting and audience banter were from that end of the musical universe, too. All the comparison needed was to darken those glasses. A reference to Warren Zevon ("enjoy every sandwich") in one of his songs made me like him even more. Some songs brought a tear to the eye, but when they did, Terry reminded the audience of a tip he'd received from Pete Seeger: if you play a sad song, be kind to the audience and follow it up with something upbeat. There were some singalongs mixed in, in the classic folk tradition.

This was a very enjoyable show. Terry is one of those under-the-radar performers on the circuit that makes you wonder where he's been all these years. He utilized beautiful harmonics on the guitar and sang with a down-to-earth warmth and clarity that made every song a pleasure to listen to. Covers included Peter Paul and Mary and the Everly Brothers. Though he's definitely a folkie from head to toe he did say that he got his start in a rock band called Loose Ties, and you could hear the occasional echo from his rock 'n roll youth. He finished up with the Beatles' "In My Life." Can't go wrong, ending with a tune by the Beatles. We left this show with that happy was-that-a-great-show-or-what feeling. Went home with a couple of his CDs and a new favorite.
