Review
This show was a lot different from last week's show in a Unitarian church. Zoë had a four-piece band that filled out the sound very satisfactorily, and along with the two hour format, this gave her the chance to pull out some chestnuts from her long career, like "Prince of Love" and "Between Dog and Wolf." Visually, what a very cool place to take pictures, with a very busy array of somewhat provocative decorations on the wall behind the band. Ron Siegel (bass) and Kareem Sanjaghi (drums) were familiar members of the band. Tom Leidenfrost (accordion) we'd seen with Zoë twice before, and John Wolf on trombone was new to us. Zoë, with her ability to hum just like a trombone, traded licks back and forth with John a couple of times. Roxanne Layton is off playing her annual holiday tour with Mannheim Steamroller, and her absence meant no recorder or backing vocals, but the trombone was a very enjoyable replacement.
The Crown and Anchor wasn't exactly warm, with its main performance space protected from the outdoors with plastic sheeting (during the summer it's obviously just open to the outside), so we never took off our winter jackets, but hot music and hot tea compensated. The food was good, the staff and the rest of the audience were friendly and loved Zoë, and were very welcoming to the two fans who had driven 70 miles from the other end of the Cape to enjoy what the Educated Fleas had to offer. It is an easy drive, the parking was close and (at this time of year) free at MacMillan Wharf, and there was a nice view of the Pilgrim Monument all lit up for the holiday season.
