Concert Review

Although a standing venue, Maxwell's isn't my favorite place to see a show. The sound and the lighting are not very good. The club and the stage are both too small. The location is difficult to get to and the traffic was truly horrible getting there. It's true that there is decent food in the attached restaurant, which is always a plus.

But there was plenty of upside to the evening to make up for all that. The opening band, Sit 'n Spin, were four women who played straight ahead rock and roll with a lot of enthusiasm and personality. They did a stunt -- two of them knelt on the floor and a third stood up on their backs and played a guitar solo. They must have had a cheerleading background.

From the stage Dave asked local fan Annie "how's the baby?" How sweet that he remembered that the last time he'd seen her, at a show a few months ago, she'd been quite pregnant (with her now 3-month old son David).

Musical highlights were many. A rocking version of "Guilty." A fairly komplete version of "Party Line." The chorus and the guitar parts of "Sleepwalker," with lyrics that changed to "Skywalker" by the end. A few bars of "Yoda," the Weird Al parody of "Lola," one last little send-off of Ray -- but Dave has basically quit making fun of or even referring to his brother in the shows. He uses some of the songs Ray wrote, that's about the only reason Ray Davies comes into these performances.

There was an audience moment even more fun than most. During "Fortis Green," on the line "put the cat out," what started out in previous shows as a quiet audience meow to add atmosphere to the song has turned into a flagrant effort to make Dave laugh. This night the meowing was such that he had to do the line three times. We fans really like getting to Dave and he really loves giving it back.
