Sun Session 45

Review

How can you improve on a concert at the local library? I hadn't been to a show at the Bourne Library (I live in Bourne on Cape Cod) since before Covid, so it was a real treat to attend this concert on the lawn on a very pleasant summer evening. We saw a performer we'd never heard of, Jon Waterman, who has an unusual approach to songwriting. As a history major, he has an abiding interest in events of the past, as well as a real love for popular music. He played for an hour, and the songs included some of the most unusual topics ever. One song featured a female author of Ancient Mesopotamia, considered by scholars to be the first woman writer ever. Another was about a battle waged in medieval times in Kosovo. Then there was the story of a Black man released from prison after serving 40 years for a murder that turned out to be an accidental death. And one about Elvis Presley recording a rare song at Sun studios -- that's the one I got a video of.

The music was mostly in the blues realm with some straightahead folk. Jon played and sang very well, and his introductions to the songs were all very interesting. The folks who turned out for this show were treated to something quite unusual and entertaining.
